Print this ArticleCampaign for Biofuels Specialty License Plate in Indiana
ISA is working to gain support for a Biofuels special recognition license plate to be made available through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The Biofuels license plate will promote both soy biodiesel and ethanol as Indiana-grown renewable fuels helping to move the state forward. The Biofuels license plate will cost drivers between $25 and $40.
Check out our top four design picks below. We need 500 signatures on a petition before we can submit our application to the BMV. If you would be interested in buying a Biofuels license plate, please click on the link below, print out a copy of the petition, fill it out (ask your friends and family to do the same) and mail it to: Indiana Soybean Alliance, 5757 West 74th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46278.

Burning The Bean
Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources, such as soybeans. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use and biodegradable.

Soy Biodiesel Blending
Indiana leads the nation in terms of biodiesel blending capabilities. Twelve terminals in the nation with biodiesel blending capabilities – four are in Indiana. They include terminals for Countrymark at Jolietville, Peru, Switz City and Mt. Vernon.
Soy Biodiesel Distribution and Sales
Tankwagon/transport delivery
48 Indiana companies sell biodiesel blended fuels in this manner.
Fuel stations
66 Indiana companies sell biodiesel blended fuels in this manner. No other state has more biodiesel public pumps than the state of Indiana.
Since January 1, 2005, Hoosier consumers have demanded more than 2.6 million gallons of pure soy biodiesel. That pure biodiesel, commonly blended as B2, B5 and B20, translates to about 132 million gallons of blended soy biodiesel.
B2 benefits
- Reduces America’s dependency on foreign oil and supports America’s economy – specifically America’s agricultural industry.
- ISB recommends B2 and B5 for farm and over-the-road use.
B20 benefits
- B20 biodiesel reduces carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions by 12% and hydrocarbon emissions by 20%.
- B20 biodiesel can be used year round and requires no tank or engine modifications.
- ISA recommends B20 for school and government use
- Ideal for Indiana’s 17 non-attainment counties (counties that don’t meet federal standards for air quality). In southwest Indiana that includes Vanderburgh, Warrick, Dubois and parts of Spencer, Gibson and Pike counties.

Tax incentives
Congress passed and President Bush signed the nation’s first biodiesel tax incentive on October 22, 2004. The incentive was endorsed by a number of American corporations, 89 percent of the U.S. public, and numerous organizations such as the Indiana Soybean Growers Association and Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc.
ISA Strategic Biofuels Objective
Increase the production, availability, and use of soy biodiesel in Indiana.
Building demand for soy biodiesel stimulates demand for soybean oil—preferably from Indiana soy processing facilities. Local methyl ester production strengthens Indiana’s soy processing industry and supports stronger local soybean markets.
ISA will identify methyl ester production incentives—including direct investment, government supports, and demand strategies—that promote production and use of soy biodiesel.
Indiana soybean checkoff funds have been invested to support Countrymark Co-op as one of the nation’s leading soy biodiesel distribution systems. With four terminals in Indiana distributing biodiesel to retailers, Indiana’s use of soy biodiesel is expected to grow from 400,000 gallons in2004 to more than 4 million gallons in 2005.
